Some dementias are caused by a genetic mutation. Mostly people with a familial condition will be aware not only of parents with progressive neurological symptoms, but aunts and uncles and brothers or sisters. People at risk of an inherited dementia are particularly valuable to medical research as the condition can be studied in the very early stages.
